Boschfontein Colliery
Opened in 2025, this contract mining opencast operation adds to the growing production capacity.
Boschfontein is located east of Middelburg, just off the N4 toward Belfast, accessible via the R104. Spanning approximately 200 hectares—including active, rehabilitation, anddevelopment areas—the site is currently operational and mining around 50,000 tons of coal
per month through opencast methods. The estimated reserve stands at ±1.3 million tons, with active drilling and exploration underway to unlock further resources. Preliminary indications suggest the potential to
expand the total reserve by an additional 5 million tons, which will significantly extend the life of the mine.
Mining at Boschfontein commenced in early 2025, with a planned operational life of approximately six years based on current reserve and production figures. With its consistent monthly output and forward-looking development strategy, Boschfontein is well-positioned to
remain a steady contributor to the regional coal market. The site reflects a practical, resource-driven approach to coal extraction, supported by ongoing exploration and adaptable mining operations.
